There are increasing demands in the work place, including the need to communicate in English in written or oral communications. Accordingly, English has become a crucial tool in apprehending the world´s professional and academic opportunities.
General Objective
English Department graduates will be eloquent speakers of English with high applicability in any academic or English-related professions; with distinctive features of technological acumen. Specific Objective
The English Department focuses on the learning process with the following competences and features:
- Active learners of English, with solid knowledge and reliable skills in Language, Literature and Culture;
- Critical thinkers, with good analytical and logical reasoning;
- Independent learners who take responsibility for their own learning with the use of multi-channel learning opportunities;
- Research abilities to undertake simple enquiries with good investigative ability;
- Language experts who are expected to become a mainstay in the development of language both in Indonesia and abroad;
- Good technical skills, organizational skills, managerial skills and computer skills – all crucial for global competition and academic pursuits.
The English department prepares its graduates to be fluent in English in order to embrace academicals and English-related career opportunities. The curriculum is focused on language skills and analysis of literature and culture, covering English Grammar, Applied Linguistics and Literary Genres. In response to professional opportunities, subjects related to tourism, teaching and office responsibilities are also offered for more practical use of English.
In specific, the curriculum:
- Combines an academic atmosphere with active study so that graduates have solid knowledge and reliable skills in Language, Literature and Culture;
- Develops the knowledge and skills of the students in a foreign language discipline;
- Develops the attitude and critical reasoning of students;
- Encourages the students to develop an attitude of independent learning which will continue into their professional lives in their approach to lifelong learning;
- Provides students with the knowledge of research techniques so that those who wish to will have the skills to study at post-graduate level.
Core Group
This group is designed to equip students with the ability to use English for communication purposes, and consists of grammar, listening, speaking, writing and reading from basic to advanced level in order that the graduates have sufficient knowledge and skills to enter the world of work.
Elective Group
This group offers optional courses as Broadcasting, Editing, Advertising, Popular Culture, and Public Speaking, which can be taken up separately. It has the purpose to widen the insight and knowledge of the students according to their interest and curiosity in certain knowledge areas as mentioned above. By covering various topics they will have greater opportunity to be able to apply their future occupation in addition to the language skills acquired during the study.

Included in this group are Public Relations, Leadership and Organization, and Organizational Behavior.
- Tourism
Included in this group are Tourism Management and Planning, Tourism Marketing, Hotel and Restaurant Management.
Concentration Subject (Stream)
There are two concentrations in this department:
- Literature
Focuses on the analysis of works of literature, the foundations of subjects such as Poetry Analysis, Drama Analysis, and Literary Criticism
- Applied Linguistics
Underlines the importance to linguistics awareness and analysis of language-related phenomena, which takes advantage of subjects such as English Phonology, English Semantics, Sociolinguistics, Pragmatics and English for Specific Purposes.
