Obviously, learning and acquiring foreign languages is very vital in the global age. As one of the world’s leading economies, Japan plays a major role in the world of industry. Japanese companies can be found all over the world, including Indonesia, where it is the largest investor. This means the ability to understand the Japanese language and culture is a must for those who want to develop their careers in Japanese multinational companies.

The Japanese Studies program at BINUS UNIVERSITY, which was founded in September 2001, provides instruction in the four language skills (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening). Other skills, such as translation and interpretation, and other work-specific knowledge, are also taught.

Apart from studying, the Japanese department organizes several activities such as Taiko (Japanese traditional drum), Odori (Japanese traditional dance) and Tezukuri (handmade products), as well as workshops featuring Japanese calligraphy, flower arrangement, origami and many others.

General Objective
The objectives of the Japanese Studies program are to prepare students to be leading Japanese language professionals in various fields, especially in industry, interpretation, and translation. To achieve these objectives, the program runs two courses called Interpretation and Office.

Specific Objective
The specific objectives of the program are to for students to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Japanese Literature with the following knowledge and competencies:

1. Knowledge of Japanese linguistics, culture, society, history and literature;
2. Ability to communicate in Japanese in a business environment;
3. Ability to translate and interpret from Indonesian to Japanese and vice versa;
4. Ability to conduct presentations in Japanese.

The curriculum used in the Japanese Studies program has been developed in line with the national curriculum.
Generally, the subjects are divided into the following groups of subjects, commencing in the fifth semester.

Interpretation
The objective of this group is to for students to become competent to interpret Japanese language into Indonesian language and vice versa.

Office (Japanese in Business Industry)
The objective of this group is for students to understand the in Japanese corporate system and to use appropriate expressions and vocabulary in various business situations.

Core Group
The objective of this group is to provide fundamental knowledge in Japanese language such as linguistics, culture, history, society and literature. The subjects included in this group are Japanese Language (1 - 4), Writing and Reading Japanese characters (1 - 4), speaking and listening (1 - 4), Images of Japan, Japanese society and culture, Japanese Computer (1 - 2), Japanese History, Modern and Classical Japanese literature, Experiencing Japanese culture, Business manners, Japanese language competency test (Level 3 and 4), Japanese Phonology and Morphology, Analysis of text (1 - 2), Intermediate Japanese characters (1 - 2), Composition and speech (1 - 2), Translation from Indonesian to Japanese and Japanese to Indonesian, Contemporary Japanese Society, Japanese Syntax, Japanese Semantics, Advanced Japanese (1 - 2), and dissertation writing.

Elective Group
The objective of this group is to provide students with the practical knowledge required for business and other fields related to Japanese language. Subjects include: Interpretation from Indonesian into Japanese and Japanese into Indonesian, Public Relations, Comic translation, Japanes business letter writing, Japanese Business Conversation (1 - 2), Translation of lyrics of Japanese songs and lines of Japanese films and animations, Public Speaking, Japanese teaching methodology, Japanese drama, Japanese tourism and Japanese language competency test (Level 2).

There are two concentrations in this department:

1. Translating
       a. Direct interpreting Japanese - Indonesia / Indonesia - Japanese
       b. Japanese Comic Translating
       c. Japanese Animation / film translating
       d. Japanese song / lyric translating
2. Office
       a. Public Relation
       b. Japanese business correspondence
       c. Public Speaking
       d. Japanese business conversation
